Open access publishing in Biomed Central – an update

For the past two years, the Library has funded on behalf of the College a pre-pay membership with BioMed Central (BMC), an open access publisher specialising in biomedical and physical sciences. Unfortunately we cannot afford to maintain this membership for 2008-9, so from 30th August we shall no longer be able to pay BMC publishing costs for Imperial College researchers.

We greatly regret that we cannot continue to fund this service which has proved very popular over the past two years but are hopeful that we may be able to reinstate it at a later date. Meanwhile College researchers can of course continue to publish with BMC but will have to meet any costs themselves. Existing funders may be be willing to pay open access publication fees and new grant applications may make provision for this. We provide advice about funding on the Library website.

Researchers without external funding may prefer to publish in one of the 5 BMC journals which offer free article processing, or to submit their material to publishers who allow the author’s accepted version to be self-archived in an institutional such as Imperial’s Spiral or a subject-based repository such as UK PubMed Central .
